Supernatural S12E14 Review: The Raid

3

mary-sam-dean-winchester-supernatural-the-raidIn “The Raid,” Supernatural picks up where “Family Feud” left off. Sam and Dean are still absorbing the news that their mom is working with the British Men of Letters. The conflict between Mary and her sons is brought to screen beautifully by writer Robert Berens and director John MacCarthy. The strain among the Winchester clan underlies the tension between the British Men of Letters and the American hunters. If you think vampires are scary, wait until you get a load of Dean Winchester hurt by his mother’s betrayal. Continue reading

sam-dean-rowena-gavin-2-superantural-family-feudFamily is complicated. Relatives stir up strong emotions, bringing out our best and our worst. In “Family Feud,” Supernatural gives us an intense episode that’s all about the good, the bad, and the ugly of kin. Supernatural presents several intermingled narratives reminding us that dealing with family is never easy. “Family Feud” introduces a new Prince of Hell, Dagon, who is focused on Lucifer’s unborn child. Crowley’s son Gavin MacLeod, a Prince of Hell of a different kind, reappears after three seasons. Continue reading

Dean and Sam on a Japanese game show in “Changing Channels”

Sam and Dean Winchester have kept fans engaged through 12 seasons of Supernatural. The series’ passionate fanbase has helped ensure its continued renewal by the CW. It’s possible the series could persist as long as actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles want to keep playing the Winchester brothers. Supernatural keeps fans under its spell through creative storytelling and innovative ideas, grounded in emotional family moments. What other series could tell a story about two brothers hunting monsters from the perspective of a car called “Baby”? Their unconventional approach has helped Supernatural sustain its appeal, even after a dozen years. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E12 Review: Stuck in the Middle (With You)

9

diner-scene-supernatural-stuck-in-the-middleIn “Stuck in the Middle (With You),” Mary Winchester leads a demon hunt that doesn’t go quite as planned. Mary has her own agenda that Sam and Dean are unaware of. If Supernatural has taught us anything, it’s that Winchesters keeping secrets from each other never turns out well. Writer Davy Perez reaches into the series’ past to weave in some intriguing connections to the present, including an unexpected Crowley backstory. “Stuck in the Middle (With You)” was directed by Richard Speight, Jr. (Gabriel), who really understands the relationships between all these characters. Supernatural S12E11 Review: Regarding Dean

3

icebucketIn Supernatural’s 11th episode of Season 12, “Regarding Dean,” we get witches, a bunny, tiny vodkas, and lots and lots of Dean Winchester—both the silly and the sad. “Regarding Dean” was written by new Supernatural writer Meredith Glynn, who also wrote “The One You’ve Been Waiting For” (S12E05, AKA the Hitler one). It was directed by John Badham, who has been with the show since Season 9. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E10 Review: Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets

2

sam-dean-lily-supernatural-lily-sunder-has-regretsCastiel’s past comes back to haunt him in “Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets.” It turns out there are consequences for some actions, whether “comic” or not. Castiel isn’t the only angel who appreciates humans on Supernatural, but he often seems to be in the minority amongst those of the Heavenly realm. Angels have a mixed reputation among the humans as well. In “Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets,” Supernatural reminds us once again that angels are just as flawed as humans. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E09 Review: First Blood

5

sam-dean-in-van-supernatural-first-bloodIn “First Blood,” Sam and Dean have been taken by the Secret Service for trying to assassinate the president. Castiel and Mary have no idea how to find them. The black ops imprisonment doesn’t feel like Supernatural, but perhaps that’s the point. Still, we’ll take monster hunts over secret American military installations any day of the week. Despite the incongruence, “First Blood” manages to include a few lines destined to become Supernatural classics, as well as emotional Winchester family moments. “

Supernatural S12E08 Review: LOTUS

1

cas-sam-dean-supernatural-lotusSupernatural gives us lots to like in the Season 12 midseason finale “LOTUS.” Though episodes from writers Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming can be hit (“Soul Survivor”) or miss (“Route 666”), this Supernatural writing team has certainly made their mark over the twelve seasons. Having experienced director Phil Sgriccia at the helm helped to create an intense midseason finale, in which what seemed impossible came to be. And we’re not just referring to a magical egg creating cool special effects. Continue reading
