In “Alpha and Omega,” Supernatural stays true to what matters to them—family. Even the surprises they throw at us reinforce the importance of familial relationships. Supernatural has been able to stay on the air for over a decade by giving us scary monsters, but grounding it in the special bond between Sam and Dean Winchester. Throughout Season 11 we saw the power of family relationships—not just in the Winchesters, but through Chuck and Lucifer, Rowena and Crowley, and God and the Darkness. The Season 11 finale “Alpha and Omega” culminated with Dean getting what he needs the most—his family. Supernatural knows we love monsters, the battle between good and evil, and witty metafiction, but that it’s the bonds of family that keep us coming back. Continue reading

“Safe House” hails the return of Supernatural’s favorite father figure, Bobby Singer. We look forward to what has become Jim Beaver’s annual appearance in the series and appreciate the creative ways the writers find to integrate his character into the story. Supernatural gives us an episode full of mirrored moments as Sam and Dean investigate a case that Bobby and Rufus Turner (Steven Williams) were involved with years earlier. We’re reminded that the Winchesters have faced down an end-of-the-world scenario in the past, though it came at a great cost. Supernatural gives us a riveting mid-season finale with “O Brother Where Art Thou?” Sam faces his biggest fear so he can figure out how to fix what he’s broken when the Darkness was released. In the process, he ends up getting closer to his old nemesis than he expected. While Sam gets reacquainted with the Great Deceiver, Dean gets to know the Darkness a little better. Sam and Dean aren’t the only ones concerned about the Darkness. Will the middle-management angels reinvigorate their warrior reputation?

Supernatural creates an instant classic with the Impala-centered episode “Baby.” The episode is likely to be remembered as one of the series best, bringing together what we love in Supernatural–family, unusual monsters, humor, and a story with a unique perspective.
