sam-dean-rowena-gavin-2-superantural-family-feudFamily is complicated. Relatives stir up strong emotions, bringing out our best and our worst. In “Family Feud,” Supernatural gives us an intense episode that’s all about the good, the bad, and the ugly of kin. Supernatural presents several intermingled narratives reminding us that dealing with family is never easy. “Family Feud” introduces a new Prince of Hell, Dagon, who is focused on Lucifer’s unborn child. Crowley’s son Gavin MacLeod, a Prince of Hell of a different kind, reappears after three seasons. Continue reading

Dean and Sam on a Japanese game show in “Changing Channels”

Sam and Dean Winchester have kept fans engaged through 12 seasons of Supernatural. The series’ passionate fanbase has helped ensure its continued renewal by the CW. It’s possible the series could persist as long as actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles want to keep playing the Winchester brothers. Supernatural keeps fans under its spell through creative storytelling and innovative ideas, grounded in emotional family moments. What other series could tell a story about two brothers hunting monsters from the perspective of a car called “Baby”? Their unconventional approach has helped Supernatural sustain its appeal, even after a dozen years. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E11 Review: Regarding Dean

3

icebucketIn Supernatural’s 11th episode of Season 12, “Regarding Dean,” we get witches, a bunny, tiny vodkas, and lots and lots of Dean Winchester—both the silly and the sad. “Regarding Dean” was written by new Supernatural writer Meredith Glynn, who also wrote “The One You’ve Been Waiting For” (S12E05, AKA the Hitler one). It was directed by John Badham, who has been with the show since Season 9. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E10 Review: Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets

2

sam-dean-lily-supernatural-lily-sunder-has-regretsCastiel’s past comes back to haunt him in “Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets.” It turns out there are consequences for some actions, whether “comic” or not. Castiel isn’t the only angel who appreciates humans on Supernatural, but he often seems to be in the minority amongst those of the Heavenly realm. Angels have a mixed reputation among the humans as well. In “Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets,” Supernatural reminds us once again that angels are just as flawed as humans. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E09 Review: First Blood

5

sam-dean-in-van-supernatural-first-bloodIn “First Blood,” Sam and Dean have been taken by the Secret Service for trying to assassinate the president. Castiel and Mary have no idea how to find them. The black ops imprisonment doesn’t feel like Supernatural, but perhaps that’s the point. Still, we’ll take monster hunts over secret American military installations any day of the week. Despite the incongruence, “First Blood” manages to include a few lines destined to become Supernatural classics, as well as emotional Winchester family moments. “

Supernatural S12E05 Review: The One You’ve Been Waiting For

5

sam-nazi-room-supernatural-the-one-youve-been-waiting-forIf the title of the latest episode of Supernatural, “The One You’ve Been Waiting For,” is meant to convey our excitement at having an episode both written and directed by women, then they got it right. During the first five seasons of Supernatural there was only one episode directed by a woman—“Hunted” from Season 2, directed by Rachel Talalay. There have only been three episodes over the past 12 seasons that were both directed and written by women—the aforementioned “Hunted,” the Season 9 episode “#THINMAN,” and now “The One You’ve Been Waiting For.” The lack of female writers and directors is not just an issue for Supernatural; it plagues the industry. And maybe a few other jobs as well. Continue reading

Supernatural S12E05 Recap: The One You’ve Been Waiting For

suit-dude-dean-sam-supernatural-the-one-youve-been-waiting-for“The One You’ve Been Waiting For” isn’t exactly the Supernatural episode we’ve been waiting for, but it will do. Sam and Dean revisit an old enemy when the Thule Society resurfaces. Naturally, the boys have to save the world again, but they do so in their own quiet way, making the world safe for democracy. Wrong war, but you get the idea.
