On Saturday, January 13, an erroneous alert about a ballistic middle inbound for Hawaiʻi created public fear and confusion. This personal essay isn’t our usual type of content at The Supernatural Fox Sisters, though dealing with a potential missile threat was certainly a spooky situation.

In “Advanced Thanatology,” Supernatural gives us the heebie-jeebies with a tale of torture, death, and the dangers of adolescent peer pressure. It’s more than a monster hunt, with a couple of reunions to spice up the drama of Season 13. “Advanced Thanatology” reinforces what we all already knew in our hearts—the Winchesters are important to life, the multiverse, and everything. 
The Walking Dead gave us a action-packed episode in “The Damned,” with a few emotional punches thrown in for good measure. The plan to take down the Saviors is in full effect, with three simultaneous attacks intending to take down several Savior outposts. Some exposition regarding each team’s objectives would have gone a long way to make the episode easier to follow. “The Damned” is about the tension and strategy of war, but it also addresses the moral conflicts engendered in armed conflict. 
“Patience” focuses on the core themes we’ve seen in Supernatural for over a decade. The series may be labeled as science-fiction for award shows uncertain where to place it, but ultimately Supernatural is a family drama set against a backdrop of monsters, angels, and demons. Whether it’s the Winchesters reacting to a nephilim based on their own feelings of loss or a wraith attack revealing long-kept secrets, Supernatural is still about family.

In The Walking Dead Season 8 premiere, “Mercy,” war has come. Alexandria is no longer on the defense, but has joined with the Hilltop and the Kingdom to take the fight to the Saviors. The quote, “May my mercy prevail over my wrath,” shared first by a stranger then repeated by a red-eyed version of Rick at the end of the episode establishes the struggle of whether mercy or wrath will drive the characters’ actions. The Walking Dead continues to explore how shifting morality influences conceptions of hope and freedom while forging a new society.
In “Choose Your Pain,” Star Trek: Discovery showcases the skills of its cast in an episode filled with conflict, collaboration, and moral uncertainty. The story reveals more about the Discovery characters we’ve already met, brings back someone from Star Trek’s future/past, and introduces a new recruit for the crew. “Choose Your Pain” not only serves to help us understand the characters better but also takes a shot at explaining the complicated organic drive to the audience once again.
