In “Alpha and Omega,” Supernatural stays true to what matters to them—family. Even the surprises they throw at us reinforce the importance of familial relationships. Supernatural has been able to stay on the air for over a decade by giving us scary monsters, but grounding it in the special bond between Sam and Dean Winchester. Throughout Season 11 we saw the power of family relationships—not just in the Winchesters, but through Chuck and Lucifer, Rowena and Crowley, and God and the Darkness. The Season 11 finale “Alpha and Omega” culminated with Dean getting what he needs the most—his family. Supernatural knows we love monsters, the battle between good and evil, and witty metafiction, but that it’s the bonds of family that keep us coming back. Continue reading

Game of Thrones gives us a vast world full of multiple storylines, scores of characters, and different locations.“Book of the Stranger” gives us a new sampling of that world, as we get every week for ten weeks a year. Some of the samples offered are delicious treats we can’t get enough of, while others we consider with mild indifference—and then there are those that make us feel a little sick. At the next serving, we might get excited about something fantastic we experienced before, but when it’s plated up for us again they’ve changed the recipe, often with mixed results. In “Book of the Stranger” we’re reminded that although something on Game of Thrones may not have agreed with us in the past, the next time it’s served to us we might find it delectable.

Game of Thrones is a world filled with deaths, secrets, and power conflicts. It’s these features that create so many interesting turns in Game of Thrones. We continue to watch because both the story and the characters keep us intrigued. Despite occasional moral misgivings, we watch Game of Thrones because of these aspects, not despite them. “Oathbreaker” gave us what weʻve come to expect—a few deaths, some secrets revealed, and attempts to accrue power. “Oathbreaker” was a solid episode with a steady pace that piqued our curiosity about what’s to come.
