Zombie culture has reached new heights with television, cinema, comics, novels, conventions, and every other form of popular media you can think of. AMC’s The Walking Dead, now in its 6th season, is one of the most popular television shows today and spawned the sister series Fear the Walking Dead last summer. Meanwhile the lesser-known series Z Nation has just finished its second season on the SyFy channel. Continue reading

iZombie S01E02 Review: Brother, Can You Spare A Brain?
1In Episode Two of iZombie, “Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?”, Liv helps solve the murder-by-paintbrush of a libidinous artist, and we learn that Liv is not the only one of her kind in Seattle.
Blaine (David Anders) is the very same fellow who tried to sell drugs to Liv on the ill-fated party boat. Seems like Blaine’s batch of Utopium must have been cut with some goofer dust or something—he and half the party guests quite suddenly went full zombie, and he infected Liv with a bloody scratch to the forearm. At the end of the pilot episode, we saw Liv having victim flashes from a late-night brain snack and saw Blaine’s face as he attacked the brain’s former owner. Continue reading
iZombie S01E01 Review: Pilot
0Our usual feeling is that network TV needs another police procedural like a hole in the head, but we’ll make an exception to that rule for a crime-fighting zombie. iZombie comes with the imprimatur of Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, and the pilot holds up to that expectation, with snappy dialogue and fun characters.
As mentioned in our Sneak Peek, iZombie is based on a comic book (it was kind of exciting to see the big “Vertigo” logo at the end of the show!), and although it diverges from the book quite a lot right off the bat, it still retains some good bits. Our heroine, Liv Moore (Rose McIver), looks quite like Gwen of the comic. And the great title sequence (featuring music by Deadboy and the Elephantmen) is done in comic style by Michael Allred, co-creator and illustrator of the comic book series. Continue reading
Sneak Peek: iZombie
4There are a host of theories as to why the appeal of zombie fiction continues to grow. Whatever the underlying psychological implications, we have high hopes for the CW’s new show iZombie, beginning on March 17.
Based on the short-run DC/Vertigo comic iZOMBIE (or I, Zombie, depending on whom you ask), iZombie the TV show has some good things going for it. Besides its basis in a great comic by writer Chris Roberson and artist extraordinaire Michael Allred, the show is being helmed by writer/producer Rob Thomas. (We are fans of Thomas’s previous productions Veronica Mars and Party Down.) Continue reading
The Walking Dead S05E05 Recap: Self-Help
5The Walking Dead has a large cast that is ever-changing as characters die, new survivors come into the fold, and we learn about new bands of people that have managed to live on. Last week’s episode, “Slabtown,” introduced a new group of survivors at Grady Hospital where Beth is being held captive. The Walking Dead writers do a good job of getting us quickly invested and interested in the storylines involving new characters. This week’s episode, “Self-Help,” provides a chance to better know Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene, who television viewers were introduced to in Season Four. Readers of the comic book are more familiar with these three characters and their mission to get to DC. “Self-Help” gives television viewers a chance to catch up a bit. Though we weren’t looking forward to this storyline, seeing it as a distraction from the story of Rick and the other characters we are more familiar with, we found it quite compelling.

2Since the start of Season Five we have been enjoying the reunion of our beloved, and not-so-beloved, cast of characters on the Walking Dead. Sure we have our favorites, but characters like Sasha and Tara still help round out the cast. Maybe we have some sort of childhood-driven complex, but we just like it when everyone’s all together. We feel safer with the group, despite Rick telling Carl in the episode “Strangers” (S05E02): “No matter how many people are around or how clear the area looks, no matter what anyone says, no matter what you think, you are not safe.” The departure of Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita, along with Glenn and Maggie—oh, and Tara, in “Four Walls and Roof” (S05E03) makes us feel a little less secure. Though the return of Daryl at the end of the episode made us feel a lot safer. Not safe like sleeping in the backseat of your parents’ car safe, but still pretty content. We were sure hoping that Daryl was going to have Beth with him, because who doesn’t love it when good things happen to boring people? Actually we came to appreciate Beth in Season Four, and we don’t want her to be left out by the group. It does seem like most of them, including her sister Maggie, seemed to have moved on without her. We thought it might be helpful for Beth to learn “How to Cope When You Feel Left Out.”

3There are several unresolved questions that Season Five of the Walking Dead has yet to answer: What happened to Beth? Will Bob survive, and does he even want to? How will the conflict between the cannibalistic Termites and Rick’s group be resolved? What is Gabriel’s terrible secret and will it affect the group? Will Rick take the group to Washington? If they get to Washington, what will they find, and can Eugene really end the virus?
