Now that we’ve been introduced to the USS Discovery, her crew, and her mission, “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” gives us a taste of what these Mycelium spores can do. We’re also reminded that the newly unified Klingon Empire remains a serious threat to the Federation. Exploring concepts of morality in wartime, Star Trek: Discovery follows some of the same themes we’ve seen in other franchise series such as Deep Space Nine. Yet the show continues to forge its own path, embracing the dramatic practices of contemporary television. “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” shows us that you don’t have to be a redshirt to die on Star Trek: Discovery. In “Context Is For Kings,” we finally get to meet the namesake of Star Trek: Discovery. The starship Discovery is a brand-new ship on a mysterious mission. The much-anticipated new series Star Trek: Discovery premiered on CBS with all the excitement fans could hope for. The presence of Ambassador Sarek (James Frain) gives the trekker audience a familiar character to help introduce protagonist Lieutenant Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green). In “The Vulcan Hello” and “Battle at the Binary Stars,” Lt. Cmdr. Michael Burnham serves aboard the USS Shenzhou along with Captain Phillipa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and Lieutenant Saru (Doug Jones). Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke)
Season 7 of Game of Thrones comes to an end with the powerful finale “The Dragon and the Wolf.” Throughout this season we’ve witnessed exciting action sequences created through a combination of well thought-out direction, groundbreaking visual and special effects, and remarkable performances. In “The Dragon and the Wolf,” Game of Thrones focuses on character interaction and storytelling, giving us a strong episode filled with emotion, subterfuge, and grand drama. Continue reading
Game of Thrones S07E06 Review: Beyond the Wall

Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
“Beyond the Wall” reminds us who the real enemy is in Game of Thrones—a convoluted storyline. Writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did give us some fun character-driven dialogue, but implausible storytelling undermined “Beyond the Wall.” After a season of stellar episodes, last week’s “Eastwatch” set us up for a fall. “Beyond the Wall” introduced some new reveals, but the condensed narrative and contrived plot devices strained the story’s credibility. Continue reading
Game of Thrones S07E05 Review: Eastwatch
1
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington)
In “Eastwatch,” Game of Thrones reveals the aftermath of the latest battle between Queen Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) and Queen Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), while Jon Snow (Kit Harington) steps up preparations for the coming battle between the living and the dead. Season 7 of Game of Thrones continues to bring together all the characters we’ve come to know, each with their own agendas. Strategies small and large are being played throughout the Seven Kingdoms, and “Eastwatch” introduces some new maneuvers into the game. Continue reading
Game of Thrones S07E04 Review: The Spoils of War
2
Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) at Dragonstone
Season 7 of Game of Thrones has been amazing us every week. Now “The Spoils of War” gives us some of the best television we’ve ever seen. Directed by Matt Shakman and written by showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, “The Spoils of War” is grounded in the kind of character-driven storytelling that has kept us captivated over seven seasons. There are moments of revelation, joy, and conflict throughout “The Spoils of War,” but Game of Thrones doesn’t stop there. There’s nothing quite like a heart-stopping battle to really top off an episode of Game of Thrones. Continue reading
Game of Thrones S07E03 Review: The Queen’s Justice
1
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) greeting visitors to Dragonstone
“The Queen’s Justice” gives viewers another beautifully filmed episode of Game of Thrones while moving the plot along at previously unsurpassed speeds. Director Mark Mylod, who also oversaw “Stormborn,” weaves filmed scenes, CGI, and expository dialogue together into a rich 70 minutes of television. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wrote some fantastic dialogue that highlighted important moments between characters, but also provided a reference to the past and the future. “The Queen’s Justice” was not as emotionally rewarding as “Dragonstone,” nor as exciting as “ Stormborn,” yet it artfully showcased some highly anticipated events in Game of Thrones. Supernatural fans will finally be getting a look at the spin-off they’ve been clamoring for. A backdoor pilot of Wayward Sisters will premiere as a Season13 episode of Supernatural. As showrunner Andrew Dabb told the audience at the Supernatural San Diego Comic-Con panel:

Game of Thrones S07E02 Review: Stormborn
2
A lot has happened in Westeros in the last few years. The War of the Five Kings ended with all five Iron Throne hopefuls dead. New players have positioned themselves on the board in Game of Thrones, and alliances are shifting and settling. “Stormborn” moves some characters forward on the path they’ve already chosen, while others find themselves taking an unexpected turn. “Stormborn” reminds us that even when things appear calm, they’re always in motion.
