Season 5, episode 14, “Spend,” gives the initial impression that things are looking hopeful in The Walking Dead. Daryl has a new motorcycle, Alexandria is recruiting again, Noah is going to learn about architecture from Reg, Glenn and Aiden seem to have patched things up, Sam hasn’t blown it for Carol, and Rick hasn’t killed anyone lately. Despite the portrayal of this bright shiny future, however, cracks, which turn into gaping holes, begin to appear in the world of The Walking Dead.

The Wendigo, “Spirit of the Lonely Places,” is a monster of the forests of the Eastern United States and Canada—areas of North America with long, cold winters. The Wendigo is said by the Algonquian peoples to be a wild anthropophagic creature created by a human having been possessed by a demonic Manitou spirit. (The name “wendigo” may apply to either the evil spirit or the inhabited physical creature.) Legends state that a person becomes a Wendigo by the consumption of human flesh. Other stories tell of people “going Wendigo” through dark shamanic magic or by being bitten by one (as with werewolves), but survival of a Wendigo attack is rare, and a gradual transformation due to cannibalism, whether out of desperation or choice, is the most commonly cited cause of infection. In episode 13 of The Walking Dead, “Forget,” we continue the exploration of Alexandria and its people. In the previous episode, “Remember,” Rick and the others were trying to adjust to life in a civil society after living on the outside for so long. It becomes clear that moving forward without being haunted by past mistrust and trauma will be difficult, particularly for some. So far Alexandria has not yet revealed any sinister agenda, but it may be Rick’s secrets that place them all at risk. Season 5 of The Walking Dead comes to an end soon, and “Forget” hints at what’s to come.

In the previous episode of The Walking Dead, “The Distance,” the decision was made to go to Alexandria. In this week’s episode, “Remember,” they get their first glimpse of this walled community. Rick remains wary, but it had become clear that they needed to at least explore this option. They will finally learn what lies behind the walls of Alexandria. In “Remember” our band of survivors tries to remember how people lived before the dead walked the earth, while not forgetting anything that has happened since then.
