“The One You’ve Been Waiting For” isn’t exactly the Supernatural episode we’ve been waiting for, but it will do. Sam and Dean revisit an old enemy when the Thule Society resurfaces. Naturally, the boys have to save the world again, but they do so in their own quiet way, making the world safe for democracy. Wrong war, but you get the idea.

After last week’s momentary reprieve, The Walking Dead plunges their recently traumatized audience into the horror of the Sanctuary. In “The Cell,” we learn that the Sanctuary is no haven, except to those who agree to be a part of the torture and violence demanded by Negan. And even among those chosen few, the tasks required of them provide them no peace. As we saw in the season premiere, to be a part of Negan’s crew they must be prepared to participate in persecution and murder. The Walking Dead may be overestimating viewers’ tolerance for watching beloved characters be brutalized.

Coming to San Francisco for the Supernatural Convention? So are we! We had a blast at the 2015 and 2016 Salute to Supernatural conventions in San Francisco, and the next one can’t come too soon. The convention will once again be held at the Hyatt Regency, near the airport (not to be confused with the downtown “High Anxiety” Hyatt Regency). Staying in the same hotel as the convention is recommended, as events such as the Saturday Night Special go late into the night. On Supernatural there are monsters, and then there are monsters. Sure, supernatural creatures may lie in wait for the unsuspecting stranger, but a betrayal by someone meant to be a protector is much more frightening. In “American Nightmare,” Supernatural reminds us that Man is the ultimate monster. Whether it’s an abusive parent or a self-righteous killer, people can be real jerks.

After a gruesome season opener, The Walking Dead allows viewers a moment of hope. In Season 7 Episode 2, “The Well,” we’re introduced to a new community called the Kingdom. Since the onset of the zombie apocalypse we’ve seen a handful of communities that have managed to survive for a time, including Woodbury, Terminus, Grandy Memorial Hospital, Alexandria, and the Hilltop, but the Kingdom is far more prosperous than anything we’ve seen before. At first glance, the Kingdom appears to be a bountiful and secure society, but Carol’s experience with new groups leaves her suspicious and she describes it as a “fairy tale.”

In “The Foundry,” the Winchesters are still adjusting to their family reunification. If Supernatural has taught us anything about returning from the dead (and there have been a lot of lessons), it’s that rebirth brings a sense of alienation. Coming back from Hell may be hard, but coming back from Heaven creates a void that’s hard to fill. These complex feelings create a backdrop for what Supernatural does best—a horror-filled ghost story. Continue reading

Just when you think smug hipsters only care about posting their Yelp reviews and lamenting the housing market, they surprise you by going into an abandoned building to rescue a crying baby. But on Supernatural, no good deed goes unpunished. No one is safe in “The Foundry,” no matter how cool and clever. All it takes is a ghostly cry and an über-creepy doll. They may be hipsters, but they still don’t deserve such treatment.
