Game of Thrones has provided us with some outstanding episodes this season, which left us with high hopes for the Season 5 finale “Mother’s Mercy.” We were not disappointed as “Mother’s Mercy” gave us some resolution, tenderness, shock, and a lot of suspense for what’s to come in Season 6 of Game of Thrones. “Mother’s Mercy” continues with themes of vengeance, righteousness, and human connection we have seen throughout Season 5.

Game of Thrones “The Dance of Dragons” follows “Hardhome,” one of the best episodes in the series. Jon Snow has forged an alliance with the Free Folk built out of desperation and fear of a common enemy. On the other hand, the shared hopes of Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister have brought them together with the goal of creating a better future. The status of King’s Landing remains a question that is further complicated by Jaime Lannister’s imprisonment in Dorne. The conflict between the Boltons at Winterfell and Stannis Baratheon’s army will decide the fate of the North, at least for now. The Stark sisters are on very different paths, but both are fueled by survival instincts and a desire for vengeance. “The Dance of Dragons” shows us that Game of Thrones continues to excel at suspenseful, emotionally-driven storytelling.

With “Hardhome” we find ourselves at the tipping point of various storylines in Game of Thrones. Jon arrives at Hardhome, the High Sparrow tightens his grip on King’s Landing, Stannis waits to invade Winterfell, and Daenerys has met Tyrion. It feels like Winter has Come, but not everyone has realized it yet. “Hardhome” show us how alliances can be made and how they can fail in Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones episode 7, “The Gift,” demonstrates that if winter hasn’t come, it’s well on the way. Watching all the political maneuvering in the Seven Kingdoms, one can’t help but wonder if any of it will matter if the White Walkers get past the Wall. While the White Walkers wait for winter to arrive, the power players in Westeros attempt to use force, authority, influence, and money to achieve their ends. In “The Gift” we see that power is not easily gained or preserved when it comes to the Game of Thrones.
