Ketch has sent Mary out to assassinate American hunters, while Sam and Dean are trapped in the bunker with Lady Toni. “Who We Are” was directed by John Showalter and written by Robert Berens, both Supernatural veterans who know the characters and the series well. Supernatural Season 12 Finale Points to the Past and the Future

After a satisfactory Season 12 of Supernatural, we get a two-part season finale that far exceeds expectations. This was certainly the most improved finale event in terms of the hit-or-misses we’ve seen over the years. In an unusual move, Supernatural gave us Episode 22, “Who We Are,” and Episode 23, “All Along the Watchtower,” on the same night. Was it a network decision driven by timing, or a storytelling choice to give us these two excellent episodes together for the Season 12 finale? Either way, it worked. Continue reading

“There’s Something About Mary” is the beginning of the end for Season 12 of Supernatural. The conflicts we’ve watched all season are finally coming to a head. “There’s Something About Mary” was written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming and directed by P.J. Pesce, the trio previously responsible for “Family Feud” and “King of the Damned.” Despite a series of grim events, the episode doesn’t have the emotional punch we love in Supernatural. We could live with the emotional omission, but it’s the flawed story that really hurts “There’s Something About Mary.” Continue reading
