Every holiday season we look forward spending time with family, traditional foods, and the Doctor Who Christmas special. This year’s special, “The Husbands of River Song,” will air at 5:15pm on BBC One and 9/8c on BBC America on December 25.

The convention of having a Doctor Who episode on Christmas Day began after the first season of the new series in 2005. The Christmas special plays to a larger than normal audience, with many family and friends watching together as part of their holiday festivities. The episodes are set during the holidays, always involve snow, and often include an invitation to Christmas dinner. If you love the Doctor Who’s seasonal show as much as we do, be sure to check out our ranking of previous Christmas specials.

River Song (Alex Kingston) returns to Doctor Who, giving us a chance to see the her interact with the twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) for the first time. If his radiant smile is any indication, the Doctor is happy to see his adventurous partner once more, and so are we.

Expect lots of holiday merriment with comedians Greg Davies and Matt Lucas joining this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special. Phillip Rhys and Rowan Polonski also join the cast.

The Doctor attempts to avoid the holiday spirit by isolating himself on a remote human colony. His solitude is interrupted when someone knocks on the TARDIS door, asking for a surgeon. When the Doctor arrives to assist, he finds himself face to face with River Song.  With such a comedically-skilled cast, we anticipate this year’s special to be a lot of fun.

The Husbands of River Song” is the 7th Christmas special written by Steven Moffat. It’s directed by Doctor Who veteran Douglas Mackinnon who last directed the episode “Flatline.”
